The N4 Toll Route was closed this morning between the Machado Plaza and Milly’s Rest Stop due to violent protest action near Machadodorp.
TRAC was alerted of the situation by road users who contacted our 24-hour Helpdesk after experiencing traffic congestion in this section. The traffic delays were caused by a burning truck that was blocking the road.
As concessionaires of the N4 Toll Route, TRAC has no law enforcement rights on this route and therefore alerted the relevant authorities who took control of the situation. Once the protesters were dispersed the road was partially opened with a Stop/Go in place while the burning truck was extinguished.
The protest action was not directed at TRAC nor the N4’s legal owner, South African National Road Agency Ltd (SANRAL), and although we respect the right to peaceful protests, as per the South African constitution, TRAC condemns the violent behaviour demonstrated by some of the protesters which resulted in damages to private and public property.
TRAC apologises for any inconvenience experienced by our road users and commit to continue putting their safety first in such situations.
