On the night of 19 June, a group of people prevented three members of the Armed Forces for the Defence of Mozambique (FADM) raping a young woman on her way home in the 30 de Junho neighbourhood on the outskirts of Mocímboa da Praia, in Cabo Delgado province.
Local residents intervened in response to her cries for help, a local source told mediaFAX.
“These military personnel of ours tried to rape a lady, not yet an adult. So, she screamed loudly and the population went to find her. We asked, and nothing happened. So, they left it there,” one of the sources explained, adding that rape by elements of the Mozambican army are commonplace.
Moments later, the people involved made a telephone call denouncing the incident to Rwandan authorities in the town. As is known, residents in Mocímboa da Praia and Palma, trust the better-disciplined foreign forces more than those of Mozambique.
“The people called the Rwandans, and they came to get the three. We don’t even know what they did then,” the source said.
