Mozambique: Japan pledges to continue supporting victims of terrorism
The British Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dominic Raab, promised the UK’s support in fighting the armed groups that have been carrying out attacks in Cabo Delgado during a telephone conversation with President Filipe Nyusi on Thursday, a presidency announcement released yesterday says.
Cabo Delgado, the province hosting Africa’s largest private investment, has been under attack since October 2017 by insurgents classified since the beginning of the year as a terrorist threat by Mozambican and international authorities.

It is estimated that at least 600 people have died In two-and-a-half years of conflict and that a further approximately 200,000 have been affected, being forced to take refuge in safer places, and losing homes, vegetable gardens and other property.
According to the presidency statement, in addition to declaring his government availability to support Mozambique, the British diplomat also expressed his country’s “solidarity in the face of this phenomenon”.
In addition to the armed violence in Cabo Delgado, Filipe Nyusi and Dominic Raab also discussed the peace agreement between the government and the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), a process that has made progress in recent days with the surrender of weapons by a total of 38 guerrillas of the main opposition party’s armed wing, within the framework of the understandings signed in August 2019.
“The two dignitaries pledged to continue cooperation between their two countries, in the political, economic and social fields, both bilaterally and in the context of the Commonwealth,” the document concludes.
