Attack on Palma Mozambique on 24 March
Statement from RA International
RA International deeply regrets to confirm that seven members of its staff remain unaccounted for following an attack which took place on 24 March in Palma, Mozambique. The attack is being attributed to insurgents. The identities of the individuals cannot be confirmed at this stage. Six of the missing persons are from the local area in Mozambique and one is a UK national.
A deceased man fitting the description of the UK national was recovered earlier today from an area that was attacked. The body has not been positively identified. There has been no update on the six missing local employees. RA International is working continuously with the authorities to clarify the situation and is in close contact with family members at this deeply distressing time.
On hearing of the attack, RA International activated its emergency procedures which included an immediate evacuation of over 150 people, RA staff and third parties. This was achieved through the chartering of airplanes and use of ferries. The company had staff in three locations, including one UK national at the Amarula Hotel. Our last communication with this member of RA staff was on Friday afternoon, after which he was part of a convoy of vehicles that left the Amarula Hotel later that day. The six local staff are also unaccounted for, and we are supporting the authorities by gathering information from witnesses to establish what has happened and where exactly our staff might be.
Soraya Narfeldt, Chief Executive Officer, RA International said:
“This is the most difficult news for the families of all of those unaccounted for, and their colleagues and friends. We are working to ensure the families are supported in this deeply worrying time and are also working very closely with the authorities. “
“The safety and security of our staff is our highest priority. We were able to react quickly upon hearing of the attack to evacuate a large number of people to more secure locations with the support of our crisis management partner, Broll Risk Management. All of our thoughts and prayers are with the loved ones of those who remain unaccounted for.”
Further information will be given as it becomes available.
