At least two police officers were killed during a raid today in the early morning in the Mocimboa da Praia district, Cabo Delgado province, northern Mozambique. According to the police, about 30 armed men simultaneously attacked the Mocímboa da Praia District Command, the Awasse Control Post and the second Company of the Police for the Protection of Natural Resources and Environment in the district.
During the attack, police killed three assailants and arrested two others and recovered two AK47 firearms. Because there are still some foci of attacks, the police say it is intensifying the patrol to control the situation. “It is premature to say that the situation is under control. What we can say is that the chase of bandits is underway. We are concerned about the size of the group, we are talking about more than 30 armed men, “said Inacio Dina, spokesman to the General Command.
Commenting on allegations that the attack was alleged to have been perpetrated by terrorist group Al Shabab, Dina said there is still no identification of the attackers. “The bandits were all masked and communicated in Portuguese, kimwane and swahili, the last two languages spoken in the north of the country.”
Police say the identity of the group will only be ascertained after ongoing investigative work, namely the interrogation of the two detainees.
