At least one Mozambican was among the victims hospitalised after being rescued from the rubble of the building that collapsed in George, a municipality South Africa’s Western Cape province.
The information was provided by Disaster Management in George to Mozambique’s consular authorities in Cape Town on Wednesday evening.
Efforts are underway to confirm whether a second Mozambican victim is also hospitalized.
Information provided by community leaders, family members and friends of the victims, also in contact with the Consul of Mozambique in Cape Town, indicates the presence of Mozambicans among the casualties and the 39 workers who remain unaccounted for.
The uncertainty of data from South African authorities and family members may be associated with the fact that many immigrants hide their real identity, either to get a job or escape acts of xenophobia.
George police have committed to providing a list of all victims, and the Consul of Mozambique in Cape Town, Ivete Uqueio, guarantees that, if there are Mozambican victims, they will receive support.
A list update in the early hours of this Thursday, confirmed eight deaths, 37 workers rescued, 14 are hospitalised in critical condition.
Yesterday, at the start of the fourth day of rescue operations, teams continued to search the rubble of the collapsed building, in an attempt to find the 38 workers still missing.
The unfinished five-story apartment complex collapsed Monday in George, a city on South Africa’s south coast around 400 kilometres (250 miles) east of Cape Town. It sparked a desperate rescue effort that has drawn disaster response teams from other towns and cities.
A total of 75 construction workers were working on the building site when the structure collapsed, George Municipality said.
