The Tax Authority of Mozambique (AT) wants to streamline the process of inspection and revenue collection in the central and northern areas of the country, where the greatest loss of resources in the smuggling of wood, gold and wildlife products occurs.
To this end, the AT is recruiting workers to guarantee sufficient human resources to manage the borders in these regions, where the largest production centres in the country are concentrated.
“It is necessary to strengthen and ensure our workforce has the capacity to guarantee that natural resources benefit Mozambicans. If export of these resources takes place, it must take place through legal means,” president of AT Amélia Muendane says.
Muendane was speaking this Thursday (January 7) during the working visit to the port of Maputo and to the capital’s 1st and 2nd Tax Administration Divisions, where she urged managers to interact more with taxpayers, in order to understand the challenges that taxpayers face and persuade them to adhere to the TA’s processes and procedures.
“The taxpayer can submit a tax declaration and make payment from his or her own office. We encourage all collection units to bear in mind the need to help taxpayers understand e-Declaration and e-Taxation, and the value it can offer in the process of paying taxes,” she said.
Traffic management is another challenge for the AT, Muendane said. This is one of the sectors that contributes most to tax evasion, generating the loss of seven to ten percent of gross domestic product (GDP) annually through the illegal transit of goods, and one of the reasons for the current reinforcement of human resources.
According to the president of AT, a study carried out recently indicates that the country loses 12.9% of its GDP annually as a result of exports and smuggling of illegal products.
The AT in the 2020 calendar year collected around 240.7 billion meticais, a figure above its defined goal of 214.1 billion meticais.
