A gang of armed robbers attacked a truck laden with money in the central Mozambican city of Beira on Tuesday, as it pulled up to deposit the cash at the main Beira branch of the country’s largest commercial bank, the Millennium-BIM (International Bank of Mozambique).
According to a report by the independent television station STV, the attack took place in broad daylight, shortly after 13.00. The raiders opened fire, seriously injuring a guard employed by the private security company G4S (Group Four Securicor).
The raiders themselves were wearing uniforms similar to those of G4S, which may have confused the genuine G4S team that was charged with unloading the money and taking it inside the bank.
One security guard, Lacerda Gravata, interviewed by STV, confirmed that the raiders had grabbed money from the truck, but he was unable to say how much had been stolen. Nor could he recall the type of vehicle used by the assailants.
Neither the Millennium-BIM management nor the police have yet reacted to the robbery.
This is the second time the Beira BIM headquarters has been attacked. It was first hit by thieves in 2014.
