Dawn on Monday was a time of terror for some Matola Gare residents, when a gang of five or more robbers broke into at least two houses, stole goods and assaulted the home-owners.
The situation was so violent that the victims prefer to speak anonymously. “They were armed with pistol and axes, and had dogs, too,” said the first victim, a warehouse clerk. The robbers did not have much trouble invading his home, since the yard has no gate.
After cutting the locks on the main door and breaking in, they first locked a minor in his room, after confiscating his cell phone. Then they invaded the room of the couple and forced them to lie down on the floor.
“Three men burst into the room wielding a pistol, an ax, and a blunt instrument. They stole our wedding rings, cell phones, my wife’s laptop and the little money we had at home,” the victim says.
In addition to having their property looted, the victims were assaulted. “They threw me out of bed and onto the floor. They stood on my head, tied me and my wife up, and covered us with blankets, as if we were dead,” he explained.
The assailants then proceeded to a neighbouring house, where they had to break through an outside wall to avoid the electric fence. Inside the house, they forced a nine-month pregnant woman to lie on her stomach, putting her life and the baby’s at risk.
“They broke through the wall and the iron bars and got into the house. When she (my wife) realized, they were already inside. They took her hostage in the bedroom and searched the whole house. They stole two laptops, three mobile phones, a Playstation and four thousand meticais. They didn’t want to carry off any heavy things,” her husband said.
The police were called, but didn’t arrive until 7:00 AM. Speaking to O País newspaper, the PRM spokesperson for Maputo province, Emídio Mabunda, said that the police were already working to identify the gang that sowed terror in Matola Gare.
