Mozambique: Mondlane reaches agreement with Portuguese right-wing party - AIM report
Armed men presumed to belong to Renamo staged an attack on Pinda health centre in Morrumbala district, Zambezia province, early on Monday morning.
Diário da Zambézia (DZ) reportedly learned from a health facility employee that, at 4:00 a.m. on Monday morning, about 15 men in green uniforms burst into the house of the health official in charge of the centre and demanded he hand over his mobile phones.
Having obtained his belongings, the men went on to the house of the pharmacist, firing their guns to silence on their way to silence the victims, reads the DZ report. The robbers took the pharmacist’s mobile phones and then went to the centre pharmacy, where they gathered up sundry medications before departing.
There were no casualties, the armed men having apparently declared that they did not intend killing anyone and only needed medicines.
After the event, the population of Pinda began to leave the area with their belongings, fearing the men’s return. The health centre is currently closed and the staff have been evacuated to the village headquarters of Morrumbala.
Morrumbala has the scene of armed confrontations recently. Last week, the head of Mepinha locality was turned out of his home by Renamo men and his motorcycle burnt for allegedly having seized an unlicensed bicycle belonging to the relative of a Renamo man.
Diário da Zambézia heard previously that Renamo men had promised two weeks ago to station roadblocks along the road to Pinda and reinforce their personnel in the area.
