Government and Renamo troops clashed in the early hours of Friday, February 12, in a region close to Sabe, Morrumbala district, in Zambezia province when Renamo attacked a unit of government forces approaching their position.
Unconfirmed reports say the clashes lasted into the morning, leaving at least five dead and Renamo seizing an unspecified amount of weaponry in the attack.
On Friday, government troops reportedly returned to the village where they lost the weapons and burned huts, accusing the population of harbouring and collaborating with Renamo combatants.
An anonymous Renamo source in Zambezia confirmed the attack on government troops approaching their position and the retaliatory burning of huts.
Contacted by telephone by Canalmoz, the provincial PRM commander in Zambezia, João Manguele, would neither confirm nor deny the incidents, saying he had no knowledge of them and that the situation was calm.
On Sunday, the situation was described as calm but with the population still in hiding.
Military clashes in Mozambique’s central region are intensifying, with the government sending more heavy weaponry, war tanks and lon range weapons, sparking speculation about another assault on Frelimo’s Mount Gorongosa positions, where it is assumed Afonso Dhlakama is hiding.
Canalmoz yesterday reported that Muxungué is the scene of major military movements by government forces, and several units of the Mozambique Armed Defense Forces reportedly left Maputo on Thursday evening bound for the central provinces of Sofala, Manica, Tete and Zambezia.
