Diário da Zambezia reports that armed clashed between alleged Renamo men and occurred at a military checkpoint in Chimuara, in Zambezia province, on Sunday, February 21.
Citing local sources, Diario da Zambezia reports the incident occurred at about 7.00 p.m., when defence and security forces saw suspected Renamo men moving in the area near the Zambezi River bridge. They opened fire, starting an exchange of shots lasting at least 10 minutes.
The source said that there were no casualties or injuries, but that the Chimuara checkpoint is now abandoned and the population has sought shelter elsewhere.
Apprehension is being felt in the nearby village of Mopeia, where some people are reported to be thinking about leaving the village in search of a safer location.
