The coordination of the peace contact group in Mozambique will be handed to an Argentine expert, Mozambique’s President Filipe Nyusi has announced.
The coordinator of the mediation group for the dialogue between the government and the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), the main opposition party, is experienced in the area of demobilisation, disarmament and reintegration, Notícias reports.
“We want to carry out an in-depth job with all the required transparency,” Nyusi said at the end of a meeting on Tuesday with Argentine President Mauricio Macri and Swiss President Alain Berset on the sidelines of the Assembly General of the United Nations in New York.
The head of the state explained that during this trip to the United States he had phoned the coordinator of the Renamo Political Commission, Ossufo Momade, saying that the next phase of demobilisation, disarmament and reintegration would take a strong team with experience in these sensitive matters. It was agreed that, in addition to the seven countries that were already part of the team, an expert, nominated by the Argentine government and with successful experience in processes of this type, would be recruited.
“We are happy that our brothers have accepted this commitment,” President Nyusi said.

Argentine President Mauricio Macri said his country was honoured to join Switzerland in the peace process in Mozambique.
“We have personnel with internationally recognised experience. We accept the challenge and we will do everything we can to bring peace back to Mozambique. A team of Argentines will travel there soon,” he said.
President of Switzerland Alain Berset noted that his country has been involved in the peace process for a long time, and that now, “we want to move forward to a new phase of the project and be part of the construction of the history of Mozambique. I think we have a team that is up to the new challenge”.
On Tuesday, President Nyusi discussed the peace process with the president of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who reiterated his country’s willingness to continue to support the demobilisation, disarmament and reintegration process. President Nyusi said that details of the Portuguese contribution would be announced shortly.
