Screen grab: Miramar
15 February, 2023 – In view of the continuation of high flows coming from the upstream countries, considering the filling level of the main dams in the southern region of the country and with the objective of mitigating flooding and guaranteeing the integrity of the infrastructures, the Regional Administration of Waters of the South (ARA-Sul IP) will take the following measures.
Corumana dam (Moamaa district, Maputo province)
The Corumana Dam will gradually increase discharges from the current 500m3/s to 800m3/s over the next few hours, which levels may be exceeded depending on the evolution of flows.
With the increase in these discharges, associated with the flow of the Incomáti river, it is expected that the water levels will rise at the hydrometric stations of Magude and Incoluana. There will be continued observance of high levels in the 3 de Fevereiro low area along the National Highway Number One (N1) and restrictions of road traffic in the road sections between Maragra – Machubo, Maragra – Calanga, Magude – Motaze, Magude – Chinhanguanine and Moamba – Chinhanguanine, in addition to flooding in the lower areas of the Sábie and Incomáti rivers.
Massingir dam (Massingir district, Gaza province)
The Massingir dam will gradually increase discharges over the next few hours from the current 500m3/s to 1,000m3/s, and these levels may be exceeded depending on the evolution of flows.
With the discharges from the Massingir Dam, associated with the outflow of the Limpopo River and its tributaries, the downstream stations, including the Chókwè, will exceed the alert level in the next 48 – 72 hours, possibly flooding the lowlands, restricting access on the road sections between Chókwè – Guija, Mabalane – Chókwè, among other routes and the villages of Chalucuane, Gogoto, Zumba, Combo, Agostinho Neto, Mango OMM, Chicumbane and the city of Xai-Xai.
ARA-Sul IP calls for the immediate removal of people and goods from risk areas to safe areas and the observance of precautionary measures. Monitoring hydrological information disseminated by the competent authorities is also recommended
