Around 110 young women – aged 18 to 24 – from all over the country will benefit from scholarships from power utility Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM), as part of the launch of the third edition of the Scholarship Program for Girls and Young Women, which took place on Monday, September 9, in Maputo.
The initiative is part of the implementation of EDM’s Gender Policy and Strategy, which aims to achieve a 40% female workforce in the company by 2030.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Joaquim Ou-chim, stated that EDM will continue to undertake solutions that place Women at the forefront of the Energy Sector.
“Since the first edition of the Scholarship Program, launched in 2022, we are proud to have managed to train 381 girls and young women, of which the company has absorbed 142. Of these, 59 are currently in the Induction Phase and another 92 in the Pre-Professional Internship”, stated the CEO of EDM.
The third edition of the Scholarship Program for Girls and Young Women has the support of the World Bank (WB), with a total amount of 11,742,240.00 meticais to cover the costs of the Scholarships, including all the safety and health materials. Additionally, EDM will offer the Scholarship Recipients a monthly allowance to cover transportation and school material expenses.
According to the CEO of EDM, thanks to the implementation of programs aimed at the Empowerment of Women and their inclusion in the Energy Sector, EDM recorded, in 2023, a growth of 2 per cent in its female workforce, rising from 18% in 2022 to the current 20%.
“This encouraging result strengthens our conviction that achieving the target of 40% female representation in EDM by 2030 will be possible, although until then we are aware that there is still a long way to go and barriers to overcome”, said Joaquim Ou-chim.
