António Pinto de Abreu, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique and former deputy governor of the Bank of Mozambique, died today after an illness.

Born in Chimoio, in 1956, António Pinto de Abreu joined the Bank of Mozambique in 1982, when he was only 17 years old. In 1992, he was head of the Economic Studies Division of the Central Bank and in 1994 he was appointed adviser to the governor of the Bank of Mozambique.
In 1995 he became director of the Department of Economic and Statistics Studies and in 1996 he was appointed administrator of the Banco de Moçambique, a post he held until his appointment to deputy governor on December 9, 2010.
For health reasons, he leaves Banco de Moçambique in 2016 to become non-executive chairman of LAM.
Pinto de Abreu held a master’s degree in financial economics from the University of London and a degree in economics from Eduardo Mondlane University.
In his academic formation, he passed through Beira and then headed to the Republic of Cuba, where he attended secondary school in La Isla de La Juventud from 1977 to 1982. there he founded and directed two groups of poetry and theatre, Lume Florindo na Florja and Flores de Abril.
Later he joined the Motivo Theater Group, founded by the late poet and professor José Pastor, where he became an actor, stage assistant and assistant director, and was part of the pieces “O Cidadão Resgatado” [“The Rescued Citizen”] and “O Milho Tem de Crescer” [” The Corn Must Grow”], which were presented in the late 80’s at theatres Avenida and Matchedje.
He wrote and published Murmúrio de Acácia [Acacia Murmur] (2000), Luar de Nwan-zi [Nwan-zi Moonlight](2002),” Cascata de Sinos [Cascade of Bells](2007), Brisa de Luz [Breeze of Light] (2015) and 50 Poemas (2015).
In June this year he launched an autobiography, ‘(Algumas das) Memórias que (eu ainda) Retenho’ [ ‘(Some of the) Memories that I (still) Hold’], published by AEMO, the Mozambican Writers Association.
He leaves a widow and two children.
