Anthrax outbreak in Manica, Mozambique: Authorities restrict movement of cattle, meat and by-products

The movement of cattle, meat and associated by-products from the province of Manica is prohibited in response to an outbreak of anthrax confirmed in animals in Vandúzi district.
The cases were notified on March 1, according to information shared yesterday by the National Directorate of Livestock Development of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADER).
Haematic anthrax is a serious zoonosis caused by the Bacillus anthracis bacteria, which can affect humans, domestic and wild animals, and is on the list of priority diseases in Mozambique.
A statement from MADER sent to ‘Notícias’ informs that the outbreak is a consequence of the drought caused by the El Niño weather phenomenon which is affecting the country.
Veterinary authorities in October, 2023, issued a warning to the provinces about the risk of the pathology occurring.
“In animals, transmission occurs through direct contact with other infected animals, or through consumption of contaminated pasture or water. In humans, contagion can occur through skin, gastrointestinal or inhalation infections, the latter being the one that causes the most deaths,” the MADER note explains.
