Another Mozambican vehicle was destroyed in South Africa on Monday afternoon, ‘O País’ online reports. A video sent by eyewitnesses shows the vehicle being consumed by the flames. There is no report of injury or fatalities.
The authenticity of the video was confirmed by the Association of International Road Transporters of Baixa, which again expressed concern about the situation.
“The situation is not good,” association president Frederico Lopes commented. ”Yesterday, after meeting the National Director of Transport and Security at the Ministry of Transport and Communications, we received information about the destruction of yet another vehicle belonging to a colleague from Inhambane. They did it in a place we thought was safe, an alternative to the problematic route. This means that they (the criminals) realized that we were using that detour and went there to destroy another vehicle.”
In view of the increase in cases, carriers intend to change the route to be used from Mozambique to Durban. “I have been talking with colleagues in South Africa about how we are going to proceed,” Lop[es explained. “We are thinking of using another route. That is, abandoning the Ponta do Ouro route altogether and starting to use the route we used 30 years ago, through eSwatini. But we cannot take this decision without discussing it with colleagues on the other side. Even after that, it must be endorsed by the Ministry of Transport and Communications.”
So the transporters continue to live in fear. “We don’t know where this is going. Even with that change, we don’t know if they will change their approach and follow us in other ways. We are afraid that the situation could spread.”
The association says only vehicles with South African registration plates are safe on the route, which is why only one vehicle left for Durban this Tuesday.
