The Mozambican NGO, the “Decide” Electoral Platform, has denounced the murder of another supporter of a former presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, in Zavala district, in the southern Mozambican province of Inhambane.
The victim, Leão de Deus, was kidnapped on Saturday and he was shot dead in Chissibuca region.
“The victim was kidnapped and shot dead in the district of Zavala. He was known for his strong convictions in support of the political movement of the former presidential candidate”, reads a statement from “Decide”.
The Mozambican police have yet to comment on the murders. According to the “Decide” Electoral Platform, with these two deaths, the number of Mondlane supporters killed by death squads has reached 13.
Last week, unknown assailants shot dead two supporters of Mondlane, in Massinga district.
On 19 October last year, Elvino Dias, who was Mondlane’s lawyer, and Paulo Guambe, an election agent for the Podemos political party, which had supported Mondlane’s presidential bid, were shot dead in central Maputo. Although these killings took place in a densely populated area, no suspects have been arrested.
In the early hours of March 15, when João de Deus Nhachengo was kidnapped and murdered, Ivo Armando Nhantumbo, 23, the leader of the demonstrations in Inharrime, went the same way and had his genitals removed.
