Another albino citizen has been kidnapped in the western Mozambican province of Tete, bringing the number of such kidnappings to three since the start of the year.
The latest victim is a 19 year old man named Vitorino Fabiao, who was abducted on Sunday in his home town of Moatize. The police told reporters that Fabião’s family only informed them of the kidnapping on Wednesday.
According to his aunt, the kidnappers used a friend of Fabiao who promised to bring a mobile phone recharge voucher to his house.
“We weren’t worried about his delay in coming home on Sunday. We thought they were still sorting something out, since they are friends”, said the aunt, who asked not to be identified. “When he didn’t come home at all, we rang up the friend, and he said he didn’t know where Vitorino Fabiao was”.
When they rang the friend again, he replied “I’m never going back to that house”. Faced with such a strange reply, Fabiao’s family concluded that he had been kidnapped, and eventually contacted the police.
The Moatize district police command sent a team to the friend’s house. They were only able to talk to neighbours who said they had seen a blue saloon car enter the yard, but they did not know when it had left again.
There were two kidnappings of albino children in Tete in the first week of January. One was also in Moatize district, in the Zobue area, near the Malawian border, and the second was in Angonia district.
The lives of all the victims must be considered as in danger, since albinos have been murdered for their body parts, regarded as imbued with magical powers, and used in black magic rituals.
