Neighbouring South Africa in the past week deported 297 Mozambican citizens (284 men and 13 women) on the grounds of illegal immigration and various other crimes, National Migration Service (SENAMI) spokesman Celestino Matsinhe revealed in his usual weekly media briefing on Thursday.
Those deported hailed originally from Maputo city and the provinces of Maputo, Gaza, Manica, Inhambane, Sofala, Tete, Nampula and Niassa.
Matsinhe said that the opening of borders to tourists in both countries had resulted in greater migratory flow at the Ressano Garcia border post in Moamba, Maputo province. Last week, 14,826 people crossed the border there (both ways), against 21,928 in the same period last year (down 32%) and 14,680 in the previous week (up 1%).
Matsinhe also reported that the Ressano Garcia border post had in the last week refused entry to six foreign citizens, four for lack of a visa corresponding to the reason for travel (work visa) and two for lack of clarity as to the reason for travel.
