Vendors from the Sher market in Chimoio are furious over the demolition of their stalls by the city council.
The Sher vendors woke up on Wednesday to find their tents demolished and erected barricades on EN6 to protest the municipality’s action, before the situation was normalised by the riot police.
Contacted by O País, the city’s markets and fairs councillor said that there had been plenty of warning for the vendors to leave the site, and in fact some of them had already done so.
Miramar indicates that the municipality has found another location for the vendors in the neighbourhood of Mudzingadzi, but the vendors said they would not leave the site because the new location was unsuitable for trading.
By 11:00 a.m. the confusion had subsided, the sellers had acquiesced in the municipality’s decision, some already setting up their stalls in the new market near the Manica Provincial Preschool. But Miramar reports that the Chimoio City Council was to look into the matter once again.
