Angola is supporting Mozambique’s fight against Covid-19 with an oxygen tank for hospitalised patients in need of respiratory support. “An oxygen tank leaves on a military freighter for Mozambique tomorrow [Monday 15-02],” a statement released on Sunday by the Mozambican presidency reads.
The offer was confirmed by President of Angola João Lourenço in a telephone conversation with President Filipe Nyusi on Sunday (14-02), held within the scope of regular contacts between the two.
During the conversation, the two presidents “exchanged information about the evolution of Covid-19 in both countries, as well as in the region, and its impact on their respective economies”.
President Nyusi updated President Lourenço on the security situation in Mozambique and “actions to combat terrorism in the province of Cabo Delgado”. The two pledged to “maintain regular consultations and strengthen cooperation”.
Mozambique recorded more Covid-19 cases, deaths and hospitalisations in the month of January 2021 than in the whole of 2020, by Sunday accumulating a total of 535 fatalities among 50,265 cases, of which 63% are accounted recovered, with 294 patients hospitalised.
In Cabo Delgado, in the north of the country, armed violence in the province where the Africa’s largest private multinational investment (in natural gas) is being developed, has now lasted for three years.
The situation has caused a humanitarian crisis, with more than 2,000 deaths and 560,000 people displaced, without adequate housing or food, mainly to the provincial capital, Pemba, and the surrounding area.
Some of the raids since 2019 have been claimed by the ‘jihadist’ Islamic State group.
