The Mozambican police on Monday arrested an Angolan citizen at Maputo International Airport in possession of 16 kilos of cocaine.
According to a report in the independent daily “O Pais”, the drug was hidden inside boxes containing vehicle ignition coils, carried in the trafficker’s suitcases.
The 36 year old Angolan (whose name was not revealed) had travelled from Brazil, via Portugal. This means that suitcases containing a large amount of cocaine had passed undetected through airports in both Brazil and Lisbon.
Police spokesperson Leonel Muchina said “He was detained when he was attempting to disembark, during the inspection work”.
The Angolan claimed he was innocent. He said he was taking the ignition coils at the request of a friend (so far unidentified) and had no idea that the boxes contained drugs.
This is the third significant drugs seizure at Maputo airport inside a month. On 13 August, a man was detained when he was attempting to smuggle five kilos of cocaine to Ivory Coast (via Addis Ababa).
Five days later, the police arrested three Portuguese citizens who were trying to embark on a flight to Lisbon with 16.5 kilos of cocaine in their luggage.
“The police remain attentive to this type of crime, to prevent Mozambique from being used as a drug trafficking corridor”, said Muchina.
