The Angolan activist and musician Luaty Beirão, who is serving a prison sentence for rebellion, attempted coup and conspiracy, is on hunger strike, silence and nudity, and is refusing to sleep in a bed.
According to his Facebook page, the rapper, along with Nélson Dibango and Evaristo Albano Bingo. had refused to be transferred from Viana prison to Sao Paulo Prison Hospital.
“I do not want to go somewhere with better conditions, when most prisoners live in precarious conditions,” he posted.
On Wednesday 4 May however, the Angolan Prison Service transferred the trio by force, leading to Luaty starting his nudity, silence and hunger protest, and refusing to receive family visits and food.
“They told us that he did not want to receive visits and that he is naked. He is not accepting food and is lying on the floor. We do not know the details,” a family member of Luaty’s is quoted as saying.
VOA were unable to contact any of Beirão’s relatives for comment.
Beirão was among 17 activist sentenced to terms ranging from two to eight years in prison for rebellion, attempted coup and conspiracy.
Beirão, who performed under pseudonyms Ikonoklasta and Brigadeiro Mata Frakuzxo, is the son of João Beirão, founder and first president of the Eduardo dos Santos Foundation.
