The search for peace and political and military stability on the African continent, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), dominated the Tuesday morning meeting between the Angolan Defence minister, João Gonçalves Lourenço, and the ambassador Alexander M. Laskaris, Deputy to the Commander for Civil-Military Engagement, United States Africa Command (Africom).
The meeting lasted about an hour and a half and was attended by the US ambassador to Angola, Helen La Lime, and senior officials of the diplomatic mission.
Ambassador Alexander M. Laskaris said that Angola has an important leadership role to play in the region and the United States are satisfied with the military relations between Angola and USA, highlighting the cooperation between the armed forces of the two States.
He stated that one of the priorities of the military cooperation with Angola is the maritime security, in the common interest, protecting fisheries and the activities developed in the Atlantic Ocean.
Alexander Laskaris said the political, military and safety situation of the DRC people was profoundly debated, as well as its implications in countries like Angola, sharing a long common border with it.
He praised the Angolan initiative to host later this month the International Conference on DRC, reiterating the willingness of Angola and the United States to achieve peace and stability in this country.
The American expects that the region and the international community speak the same language to help resolve the situation prevailing in the neighbouring country.
The military diplomat considers the situation in the DRC and Libya the most complicated cases in Africa and partnerships are needed.
Alexander Laskaris said it was also analysed the situation in the Republics of Somalia, Mali, Central Africa Republic (CAR), Mozambique and Guinea Bissau, as well as combating terrorist group like Boko Haram.
