Angola: President to receive Portugal PM on Tuesday as part of official visit

Portugal’s prime minister, António Costa, is to meet the president of Angola, João Lourenço, in Luanda on Tuesday, on the second and last day of an official visit to the country, according to the programme for the trip that was released on Friday.

Costa is due to arrive in Luanda at 7.05am local time on Monday, and is then to be received by Angola’s minister of foreign affairs, Manuel Augusto.

The delegation accompanying the prime minister is to include Portugal’s foreign minister, Augusto Santos Silva, the minister of agriculture, Luís Capoulas Santos, and secretaries of state Teresa Ribeiro (for foreign affairs and cooperation), Eurico Brilhante Dias (for internationalistion) and Ricardo Mourinho Félix (assistant minister for finance).

The institutional and political part of the official visit is on Tuesday, when Costa is to visit the Agostinho Neto Memorial in Luanda to lay a wreath to the independence leader.

Before his one-to-one meeting with Lourenço at the presidential palace – where he is to be greeted with military honours – Costa is to address the opening session of a Portugal-Angola business forum, along with Angola’s minister of state for economic and social development, Manuel Nunes Júnior.

As well as the meeting of Costa and Lourenço, there is to be a plenary session of the two countries’ governments, followed by the signing of bilateral agreements and a news conference.

The first day of Costa’s visit, which coincides with a national holiday, is to focus on trade and investment, with a closed-door meeting with Portuguese entrepreneurs operating in the Angolan market.

Costa is also to visit various historical monuments such as the Fortress of Luanda, which houses the recently recuperated National Museum of Military History.

The prime minister is also due to stroll along the Bay of Luanda and end the day with a meeting with members of Luanda’s Portuguese community, at the Portuguese Cultural Centre.
