The former president of Angola, José Eduardo dos Santos, returns to Luanda on Tuesday afternoon after living in Barcelona (Spain) since 2019, a source from the Executive confirmed to Lusa news agency.
According to the same source, upon arrival in Luanda José Eduardo dos Santos will be received by State protocol officials.
The former Angolan head of state, who has a residence in Luanda’s Miramar neighbourhood, has lived in Barcelona for the last two years, only travelling to Dubai to meet with his daughter, Isabel dos Santos, who is the target of legal proceedings in several countries, including Angola and Portugal.
Since João Lourenço took power in September 2017, some of José Eduardo dos Santos’ closest associates and family members, including his children Isabel dos Santos and José Filomeno dos Santos, have been targeted in the Angolan justice system.
Dubai, one of the seven United Arab Emirates, is, since the summer of 2019, the country where Isabel dos Santos resides. He joined her in December 2020 after the death of her husband, Sindika Dokolo who drowned while scuba diving in Dubai.
The two are the main protagonists of the scandal known as “Luanda Leaks”, involving the embezzlement of millions of dollars from the Angolan public purse through a web of companies with branches in 40 countries.
The former Angolan president travelled to Barcelona in April 2019 for routine medical tests.
