Angola is one of 32 countries that have reduced their Global Hunger Index(GHI) by 50 percent or more since 2000, but still has a “serious” level, according to an annual report presented on Thursday.
Entitled “Food systems transformation and local governance”, the report is produced annually by non-governmental organisations (NGOs) Welthungerhilfe and Concern Worldwide to analyse the state of world hunger.
The latest Global Hunger Index report – which uses data from 136 countries – shows 44 countries suffering with serious or alarming levels of hunger.

In the 2022 edition, the authors identified “signs of progress” despite the global situation being “grim and mournful”.
“The overlapping crises facing the world are exposing weaknesses in food systems, from global to local, and exposing the vulnerability of populations around the world to hunger,” it reads.
Despite these discouraging indicators, the report highlights “signs of progress, as many countries have achieved impressive reductions in hunger”.
Since 2000, 32 countries have seen their GHI fall by 50% or more, including at least one country from almost every region of the world.
Among these countries is Angola, which has an index of 25.9 (64.9 in 2000), still considered serious.
Among the Portuguese-speaking countries, Guinea-Bissau also fell from 37.7 in 2000 to 30.8 in 2022, a serious level. Cabo Verde presents a moderate level of hunger, with 11.8 (15.3 in 2000) and Timor-Leste 30.6 (37.7 in 2000).
Mozambique did not provide sufficient data and was assigned a range of 20 to 34.9 of the GHI.

In sub-Saharan Africa, Djibouti, Ghana, Malawi and Senegal also lowered their GHI by 50 percent or more.
According to the report, to which Lusa had access, four of the five countries with alarming hunger levels are located on the African continent, namely Chad, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Madagascar. Yemen (Middle East) also gets this alarming level of hunger.
The NGOs analysis of the state of world hunger identified 49 countries with a low level of hunger, moderate in 36 countries, severe in 35 countries, alarming in nine countries. The hunger scale does not point out any state with an extremely alarming level.
