Angola closes its borders at midnight

Angola will close its air, land and sea borders to the movement of people from midnight on 20 March for 15 days, renewable for an equal period, depending on the progress of the Covid-19 pandemic, according to a presidential decree.

Passengers who disembark at Angola’s airports until midnight on 20 March when they land will have to fill out a form for mandatory health checks and stay at home for a period of 14 days.

The provisional presidential decree, signed by João Lourenço, was read out on Wednesday on Angolan public television, TPA, after a speech by the President of Angola.

Cabo Verde from Thursday has prohibited air links from 26 countries, including Portugal and Brazil, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the resolution of the Council of Ministers published on Wednesday in the Official Bulletin.

The decision to ban flights will be valid at least until 9 April and is due to the Covid-19 pandemic caused by a new coronavirus in several countries in Europe, the United States, in Brazil and in several African countries, given the “intense flow of flight connections” to Cabo Verde.

The government of Mozambique has expressed concerns about the appearance of Covid-19 in African countries, admitting the possibility of imposing new measures for the prevention of disease in the coming days, although to date there are no confirmed cases in the country.

Although there are as yet no confirmed cases, Mozambique raised the state of alert and strengthened measures to prevent the outbreak of Covid-19, the head of state, Filipe Nyusi announced on Saturday.

The government will suspend “the organisation of and participation in all kinds of events with more than 300 people and discourage them from being held in enclosed spaces without adequate ventilation,” the President also said.
