More than 200 Mozambican miners working at Anglo Gold Ashanti returned to South Africa to resume work yesterday, but will first have to undergo a statutory 14-day quarantine in Johannesburg.
The miners are satisfied, if apprehensive on account of the high coronavirus infection numbers in South Africa.
Anglo Gold Ashanti miners were called to return to their jobs by phone, and the 217 miners were collected in Inhambane, Gaza and Maputo before being ferried to Ressano Garcia.
Coronavirus prevention measures are being strictly observed. Wearing of masks is compulsory, with temperature measurement and the disinfection of buses even in on the Mozambican side.
The buses that took them to Ressano Garcia stopped at the Lebombo post in South Africa, where another five other were waiting. From there, the miners left for Johannesburg, where they will be confined to hotels for 14 days.
Food and accommodation charges are being paid by the employer, Anglo Gold Ashanti.
