Another group of young people posing as terrorists burned down poorly constructed classrooms at the Metoro Primary and Complete School (EPC) in Ancuabe district, Cabo Delgado, early on Monday evening (12-09).
Potentially yet another scheme to agitate the population and then steal goods, the plan failed due to the swift intervention of Defence and Security Forces (FDS) units stationed nearby, Ikweli has learned.
“Yes, it happened, but they are not Alshababes, they are people from here, but they are not yet identified, in truth it happened,” a local resident briefly explained.
According to Ikweli sources, the classrooms caught fire at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, after which there were shouts of “Allah Akbar” (“God is great”) in Arabic, a modus operandi sometimes used by terrorists when they attack villages.
But when people left their houses to flee, they saw no-one but the security forces arriving in their vehicle. Neighbours were able to extinguish the blaze.
According to our sources, the attack was not coincidental, information having circulated in Metoro and beyond the same day that a group of terrorists had been seen near the community, specifically on the section between Metoro and the Salaue crossing, known as Silva-Macua.
Last week, the Commander-General of the PRM, Bernardino Rafael, expressed concern in the city of Pemba that local young people were involved in banditry similar to that of the terrorists, mentioning attacks such as that in Ngewe, in Ancuabe, where 13 families were left homeless, after a group of five men burned down 13 houses.
