Anadarko has announced that it is awaiting the selection of quantified consultants to perform the services required as part of the implementation of the resettlement process in Afungi (Cabo Delgado Province). Resettlement is one of the activities to be implemented in the natural gas exploration project in Area-1 of the Rovuma sedimentary basin.
As such, the US multinational has reportedly submitted a detailed resettlement plan to the government of Mozambique for approval.
If the project is approved, several services will need to be implemented, including a survey for the relocation of families and their property; medical screening of households before the resettlement process; the transfer of local residents and the relocation of their property and animals.
The company also plans to carryout training in conservation farming techniques; providing the located families with fruit trees and replacement seedlings; building a tree nursery and developing a cashew management programme.
It is important to note that last year the government and Anadarko signed a Memorandum of Understating (MoU) that sets out the arrangements for theresettlement process of more than 5,000 residents the Afungi Peninsula.
With a calculated extension of sevenhectares, the Afungi Peninsula is the area where the multinational plans to develop an industrial park to process LNG with an investment of US$20-billion.
As per the understanding, Anadarko must pay out US$180-million for the relocation process. The funds will be utilised in the construction of social infrastructure such as houses, schools, hospitals, and access roads.
The other half of the package will be allocated to development projects in the community (such as agriculture, fishing
and other activities). These projects will allow the community to become increasingly self-sustaining over time.
