In Lichinga district, Niassa province, an average of three teachers die every month from HIV/Aids-related illnesses.
The situation is exacerbating the chronic shortage of teachers in the district, as well as swelling the costs for funerals and death grants.
In the current academic year, Lichinga has already hired 38 teachers at various levels, 28 of whom were replacements.
The director of the District Services for Education, Youth and Technology in Lichinga, Marcelino Ferreira, says that the institution spends around 150,000 meticais a month on funerals and death grants, an amount it considers high in relation to its annual budget of 400,000 meticais.
