Defence and Security Forces stationed in the village of Nhamatanda, 100 kilometres from the city of Beira, have captured an alleged Renamo general preparing, with his company, to storm the local police headquarters.
According to the administrator of Nhamantanda, the general was caught after a tip=off about of a group of five men in a house in the 3rd district of the village.
“Suspecting the group, the people warned the authorities who surveilled their movements, and, when they were about to assault the Defence and Security Forces command post, took action. Four members of the group managed to escape, but the one who was captured and interrogated claims to be a Renamo general,” Nhamantanda administrator Manuel Boavida told reporters.
Boavida said there were reports of other armed men from Afonso Dhlakama’s movement circulating in some of the district neighbourhoods, but the authorities were poised to crush Renamo action of any kind.
But, according to Boavida, despite the fear hanging over the population, life in Nhamantanda goes on as normal, with the population living its regular life and public institutions functioning normally.
The alleged Renamo general is currently being questioned in police cells.
