A 54-year-old citizen, identified as A. Chilaúle has been in custody since Tuesday after being found in possession of passports and other travel documents intended exclusively for miners.
Jornal Noticias quotes Mozambican police spokesman Leonel Muchina as reporting that the detainee said he was an employee of the Civil Identification Directorate (DIC) in Chókwè, Gaza province, and was acting as an intermediary in obtaining identity and travel documents in association with an official of the National Migration Service (SENAMI), the institution responsible for issuing travel documents.
The man was intercepted by police authorities, who searched his vehicle and found 31 passports, 13 miners’ travel documents, 13 travel documents slips, 12 identity cards and three emergency certificates.
Muchina said that an investigation was underway to determine the origin of these documents, despite the fact that the detainee had confessed to operating with a SENAMI official whose name was withheld in order not to compromise the investigation.
