Mozambique: MISA protests at expulsion of Portuguese journalists
Reuters (File photo) / Good Friday, the Friday before Easter Sunday, commemorates the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ on the Cross. The most important Christian holiday is Easter, not Christmas as many assume, as it celebrates Christ's resurrection from the dead. Easter is immediately preceded by Holy Week, which includes Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, and Good Friday.
The government has declared that Good Friday (25 March) is a full-day holiday for all Christian workers and civil servants.
The decision was taken at the end of February by the Consultative Labour Commission in response to requests from Christian churches in recent years, and will give workers and employees time to attend at their places of worship.
Mozambique’s Christian congregations had in recent times complained of unfair treatment in comparison with other religious denominations.
In 2014, the Government had also granted a full day holiday for Mozambican Christian workers on Good Friday: It was the first time ever, since national independence in 1975 , that a religious event was awarded with a tolerancia de ponto to last all day, generating much controversy. Last year the Good Friday ‘tolerancia de ponto’ was only granted for half a day, from 12 o’clock onwards.
Mozambique has 19 national holidays throughout the year.
