All $130 million of it; Gigawatt Mozambique completes 120-megawatt gas-fired plant

Gigawatt Mozambique has commissioned a 120-megawatt gas-fired power station at Ressano Garcia, near the country’s southern border with South Africa, at a cost of 2 billion rand ($132 million).
The independent power producer, which won the project in June 2014, will supply electricity to Mozambique utility EDM under a long-term purchase agreement, the company said Sunday in an e-mailed statement. Pre-handover tests of the plant were completed on Dec. 10.
The southern African nation is the site of one of biggest natural gas discoveries in a generation, in the Rovuma basin off its northern coast. Standard Bank Group Ltd. said in July last year that it had arranged a $170 million loan for the construction of the plant, designed to supply about 12 percent of Mozambique’s total demand.
