Of a total of 4,240 cases of mental disorder treated in Mozambican public hospitals in 2016, more than half were related to alcohol and drugs, according to a report released yesterday by the Council of Ministers.
Quoting the report, Council of Ministers spokesman Mouzinho Saíde said that the number of cases treated represents a reduction from 2015, when 7,050 cases were seen.
“Abuse of alcoholic beverages was the primary cause of mental disorders last year, followed by consumption of cannabis,” Saíde said. The majority of people seen were under 30 years of age, he added.
In 2016, he continued, Mozambican authorities seized 1,460 kilos of cannabis against 5,300 kilograms in 2015. Five hundred and four people were arrested last year for drug use and trafficking compared to 309 in 2015.
Several internal and international reports point to Mozambique as an important drug transit point for South Africa (the largest economy in the region) and for Europe, but also as a consumer market, despite its negligible purchasing power.
