UN Women in Mozambique yesterday described the country’s rape statistics as alarming and demanded that the Mozambican authorities take urgent action.
“The escalation of sexual violence against women and girls in Mozambique is very alarming,” and violence towards women in public spaces is a daily reality in Mozambique, the organisation’s statement reads.
UN Women in Mozambique is demanding that the perpetrators of crimes of sexual violence be held accountable, and says that Mozambican authorities should take urgent measures to combat rape in the country.
“We add our voice to the condemnation and urge the competent authorities to throw the full weight of the law against the perpetrators,” said the statement, which highlighted two recent cases in Maputo.
On June 6, a 35-year-old woman was raped and killed by five individuals in the capital’s Xipamanine neighbourhood, and the same week, a 16-year-old was raped by four men in the Guava neighbourhood on the outskirts of the capital, and also died on the spot.
