AJUDEM files formal appeal against CNE ban

The Youth Development Association of Mozambique (AJUDEM) submitted an appeal to the National Electoral Commission (CNE) on Monday over the removal of its list from the local elections in the municipality of Maputo.
According to official sources, the appeal was filed on Monday afternoon and follows a complaint filed last week on the same subject.
The CNE now has five days to analyse the matter and refer it to the Constitutional Council, the body that has ultimate powers to assess electoral appeals.
AJUDEM’s head-of-list was Samora Machel Jr., and the list was disqualified because, in the CNE’s view, it did not have enough substitutes, following the resignation of four members who initially appeared on it.
