Foreign airlines are suspending flights to Mozambique because of the coronavirus pandemic, with Qatar Airways making its last flight to Maputo yesterday.
And it is not just Qatar. At least four international companies are suspending flights to Mozambique as part of measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
South African Airways has been gradually reducing the number of flights to Maputo. By next Wednesday, there will be 12 fewer, and from the 26th until at least the 31st of the current month, there will be none at all.
TAAG, the Angolan flag carrier, also announced that, as of this Thursday, all flights to Maputo are suspended for a period of 15 days, which could be extended.
The same message also comes from Lisbon, with TAP (Transportadora Aérea Portuguesa) announcing yesterday that it would stop flying to Maputo from next Monday, 23 March. The suspension of flights by the Portuguese flag carrier will, in principle, last until the 19th of April.
The suspension of flights is typical of the aviation sector generally. Angolan airspace is practically closed to flights from all over the world, an extreme measure to prevent the spread of coronavirus at a time when there is still no confirmed case reported in Angola.
