The governments of Mozambique and Botswana signed an agreement allowing Air Botswana to start direct flights to Mozambique in Maputo on Wednesday.
The agreement, signed by Mozambican Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation José Pacheco and Unity Dow, Minister of International Affairs and Cooperation of Botswana, predicts that direct air links between the two countries will start before 2020.
José Pacheco said at the signing ceremony that the agreement opened a new era in relations between the two countries. “Citizens of both countries will be able to fly between the two territories without having to pass through airports in other countries,” he noted.
Botswana’s Unity Dow revealed that Air Botswana had been investing in the purchase of new aircraft to secure its presence in new territories.
“We hope that in the near future we will see Air Botswana aircraft landing in Mozambique. We believe that Mozambique is a gateway to the world, so it was important to ensure cooperation in this area,” Minister Dow said.
Air Botswana had already signed a Special Prorate Agreement (SPA) agreement with the Mozambique Airlines (LAM) in July, extending the Botswana company’s route network – via stopovers in Johannesburg – to seven LAM destinations, including a number of cities and seaside resorts.
