The Alliance for the Green Revolution (AGRA) is committed to supporting the Mozambican government in the fight against hunger and poverty reduction.
This position was outlined on Tuesday (24-05) by former Tanzanian president and member of the Board of Directors of AGRA, Jakaya Kikwete, who is currently supervising the implementation of the organisation’s activities in Manica.
Since 2006, AGRA has been developing agriculture programs in the family sector with a view to increasing production by using improved seeds. In this context, Kikwete said, 60 Mozambicans were trained in matters of seed improvement, soil mapping and fertiliser production.
Kikwete said that the objective was to ensure that small farmers could produce enough to fight hunger and reduce poverty.
AGRA supports around 800,000 producers across Mozambique, and has invested over US$16 million in the last five years.
Kikwete arrived at Chimoio Airfield on Tuesday afternoon at the beginning of his 2-day working visit to Manica province.
Kikwete was greeted on his arrival by Edson Macuacua, Secretary of State in Manica, and Francisca Domingos Tomás, governor of the province, with whom he held a brief courtesy meeting.
The former Tanzanian president was scheduled to work in Manica’s Gondola and Vanduzi districts.
