Mozambique police have identified the uniformed individuals who appear in images circulating on social networks of garimpeiros in a mine in Namanhumbir district in Cabo Delgado being tortured.
The acts of violence circulated on social networks and came to the attention of the National Commission on Human Rights.
Police spokesman Inácio Dina confirmed yesterday that the abuses were carried out by members of the Rapid Intervention Unit who had now been identified, without clarifying whether the agents have been detained or not.
The police are already questioning suspects and have promised an announcement as soon as the investigation report is available.
At the weekly briefing covering 15 to 21 July, the police reported an increase in the number of road accidents, deaths and injuries compared to the previous week, highlighted the possibility of expelling two police officers for corruption, and reported that they had detained a total of 512 people in the various operations it had carried out.
