Mozambique’s president on Tuesday said that Africa should take advantage of its cultural wealth, considering that the 58th anniversary of the African Union (AU) on Tuesday opens space for a renewal of the continent’s commitments to pan-Africanism.
“It is time for us to take greater advantage of the enormous cultural, intellectual, and artistic wealth whether in songs, music and visual arts,” Filipe Nyusi said in a message alluding to the 58th anniversary of the creation of the then Organisation of African Unity, which is marked on Tuesday.
“Let us celebrate Africa Day by making a deep introspection on the road travelled, identifying the obstacles to remove them and visualise the subsequent steps, mobilising synergies to deepen the integration process,” Filipe Nyusi said, adding that the date is celebrated at a time when the effects of the pandemic plague the continent.
“I, therefore, express my admiration to Africans who have consented to sacrifices in the face of the pandemic,” he added.
The celebrations of the 58th anniversary of the founding of the Organisation of African Unity, now the AU, take place under the slogan “Arts, Culture and Heritage, Levers for Building the Africa we Want”.

The false impression about Africa’s true size was reinforced through the use of maps designed centuries ago which distorted shapes and sizes and made areas far from the equator such as Europe and North America appear larger than they actually were #AfricaDay pic.twitter.com/qh4FTmQRbh
