Public company Mozambique Airports (Aeroportos de Moçambique – ADM) has given assurances that the Chongoene airport, under construction in the province of Gaza, will be operational by October of this year.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with ‘Carta’, ADM financial administrator and spokesperson Saíde Júnior noted that the coronavirus pandemic had put construction works back half a year, but assured the public that Chongoene airport would be open to national and regional air traffic in six months.
The cargo terminal was already more than 80% complete, Junior said.
One year before the proposed completion date, ADM launched a 1.6 million meticais marketing campaign to avoid Chongoene becoming another ‘white elephant’, as had Nacala international airport in Nampula province.
The investment is being used to fund activities such as meetings, musical performances, publicity material and communication campaigns, and the training of service, technical and operational personnel.
In addition, the public company that manages airports in Mozambique intends to make Chongoene airport sustainable through the development of businesses in sectors such as tourism and logistics.
Chongoene airport, valued at US$60.3 million and financed by China, is designed to receive 220,000 passengers a year.
