ADS-B, a safety system by which aircraft constantly transmit their position, altitude, course and airspeed, has come into operation at Beira International Airport, in central Mozambique.
The Automatic Dependent Surveillance System – Broadcast was inaugurated by the Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications, Manuela Rebelo, and its installation in Beira is part of the Communication, Navigation and Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) concept. Apart from Beira, the system is installed only in Zambia and Namibia continent-wide.
The Diário de Moçambique says the system represents a significant improvement in safety by allowing a greater number of samples and more parameters on aircraft movement to be registered than is possible using radar. In addition, the system allows controllers to guide aircraft in airspace with smaller separation standards than previously, reducing aircraft waiting time for both landings and take-offs, and consequently lowering fuel consumption and pollution.
The supply and installation of the system was carried out by the Spanish company DF Núcleo, starting November 1, 2014, and allows air traffic controllers to visualize the progress of aircraft in national airspace.
Manuela Rebelo challenged Aeroportos de Moçambique to make the system inaugurated on Tuesday a tool to attract more traffic to national airports, putting Mozambique on the list of main destinations, both regional and continental.
“The company needs to continue to make the investments necessary to continue improving the quality of services it provides, while also honouring its commitments regarding investments already made in the country’s main airports,” Rebelo said. She urged the company to think about re-qualifying airports and redefining entry points to improve airspace management, the control of passenger entrance and exit, and the movement of cargo and mail by air.
