Mozambique: Foreign Minister expresses desire to boost economic ties with Angola
Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Saturday criticized district administrators in the northern province of Cabo Delgado for their failure to master planning.
At an extraordinary session of the provincial government held in the town of Montepuez, to which the administrators were invited, Nyusi asked each of them to speak about their district’s plans – only to discover that they were not clear about what they intended to do this year, and in particular were unsure about targets for agricultural production.
“Are you governing?”, he asked them. “Things are happening on their own, and at the end you go to a rally and repeat slogans”.
At a press conference rounding off his three day visit to the province, Nyusi said he was “not at all satisfied” with the administrators’ performance in the areas of designing, implementing and monitoring plans.
“If they have no idea about what should be produced, and there is no sensitivity towards numbers or indicators, then they don’t know if they are running quickly or slowly, and if they are going to arrive on time or not”, declared the President.
Nyusi thought it was urgent to train the district administrators, to submit them to courses to build up their capacity and thus improve their performance. “That means we are going to give them the tools so that they can do better”, he said. “If we improve knowledge, we can achieve positive and better results”.
Nonetheless, he was pleased that agricultural production has risen in Cabo Delgado, despite irregular rainfall, and that the people of the province were accepting the government’s recommendations to increase production.
“I’m happy that I’ve been here and found that we need to give the administrators support”, Nyusi said. “That’s why I came here, so that I don’t just stay in my office. We have to give the necessary support to those who need it, so that they can work better”.
