A plastic goods factory in a residential area in Maputo’s Laulane neighbourhood is said to be the source of a suffocating odour in the area.
Geraldo Cossa, a resident of the area, says that, normally, a factory of this kind would not be built in a residential area.
“It is not clear why they should put a factory here without prior study or asking the population if it would be viable. We are confronted with a strong smell like plastic burning, that invades our houses,” he said.
The factory is also causing health problems among nearby residents, driving a call for authorities to move it.
But at least one person confessed anonymously that the factory contributed to the welfare of families in the neighbourhood, because it employed many young people who got some money at the end of the month.
Approached by the Notícias reporting team, workers at the factory decline to comment as being unauthorised to do so, while the official in charge responded only in Mandarin.
Contacted by phone, the head of human resources at the plant said he had already urged factory technicians to install chimneys to improve smoke management.
“We noticed that the smoke from the factory falls directly on neighbouring houses, and a month ago we agreed that it was necessary to address the situation,” he said.
